Foel Grach - Carnedau - Foel Grach is a mountain in the Carneddau range in Snowdonia, North Wales, Wales, and included in the Welsh 3000s. It is located on a broad ridge extending northwards from Carnedd Llewelyn to Garnedd Uchaf and Foel-fras. An emergency refuge has been built beneath the summit. When I went up here I waited for the sunset and took a fine picture of Carnedd Llewelyn.

Shot over to Carnedd Dafydd and then decided to call it a day and ran down the hillside back the cars. Thank goodness we had been shopping and had some nice new clothes to change into. Had to dry the money on the dashboard.

Meall a' Bhuiridh - Meall a' Bhuiridh (Gaelic: Meall a' Bhùiridh) is a mountain on the edge of Rannoch Moor in the Highlands of Scotland. It lies near the top of Glen Coe and Glen Etive, overlooking the Kings House Hotel inn and the A82 road. The Glencoe Ski area is located on the northern slopes of the peak. Meall a' Bhuiridh is linked by a high bealach to the neighbouring peak of Creise, and the two hills are often climbed in conjunction, starting and finishing at the ski area carpark. The Clachlet Traverse is a 25 km north-to-south route linking the inn at Inveroran with the Kingshouse. Meall a' Bhuiridh is the final of four Munros crossed on this route, the others being (south to north) Stob a' Choire Odhair, Stob Ghabhar and Creise. The afor mentioned said - we tend just to bimble up this mountain in a couple of hours and then play in the snow on the way down as its the Glen Coe ski resort. Most years including this, there was no one ski'ing but there was enough snow for us to use our survival bags as sledges.

Summer in Scotland- Creise (NN238506) - horseshoe inc Meall a' Bhuiridh – wow what a hot day to do this in the summer. This was a trip and a half as we did the horseshoe up Creise, over to Bhuiridh and then down to the car park. The step down from Criese to the col was nasty even now in the summer. In winter I would prefer to ascend this step rather than descend.

Summer in Scotland- Stob Coire Sgreamhach – didn’t make it to Bidean as a ‘Winter’ storm it with high winds and we had to turn back. We used the emergency shelter on the main ridge. Stob Coire Sgreamhach is a mountain in Scotland, forming part of the Bidean nam Bian massif on the southern side of Glen Coe. It is often considered a subsidiary peak of Bidean, though since the 1997 revision of Munros Tables it has been classified as a separate Munro.

Snowdon - Yr Wyddfa – a pleasant enough walk up via the Miners Path passing the lake to join the top of the PYG Track. Descent via the top PYG track down to the car park. Cloud, light wind, ice on the PYG and Snow covered on the summit. ( Could see why so many people slip on the PYG and fall – ice was lethal if not careful. )

The climb up looked according to one of the mountain guides(ski patrol) who watched us like an alpine climb, with the whole group all following in each others footsteps up the ridge on the edge of the piste.

We parked the car and walked down the lane to the filter house – this is where we noticed we could have saved a miles walking as people had parked their cars down here whilst we had used the area marked for cars on the OS map. Started from the Neuadd Reservoir, we crossed the dam and turned left and went straight up onto the ridge to the Trig 642, the Twyn Mwyalchod Summit Trig Point with the memorial plaque to Tony Swierzy , SAS who died in 1984 attempting Everest. We then headed north along the ridge in really awful winds, but fun, setting a belting pace to get to our first summit proper of Corn Du. Then onward to Pen y Fan where we started to meet all kinds of people. We the went around to Cribyn and decided to leave Fan y Big for another day and go shopping as it was only 2pm. We shot down to the car to head from Braecon and see what it had to offer – nothing!! We should have done the last hill.

Friday Stob Coire Nan Lochan 21st March 2008. Stob Coire Nan Lochan, at 3,658 feet, is one of the high peaks of the massif of Bidean nam Bian ("peak of the mountains"). Access to the corries from the A82 requires a tough but beautiful hike over the northwestern flank of Gearr Aonach with elevation gain of over 2,000 feet. The access paths are narrow at times, and in a few places, dangerously icy. There are two steps up this path that are a nightmare in ice. I had an 'Eddie' moment crossing one step as you have to put your foot down on iced rock with a lovely long fall below you!. This is a typical point where crampons should be worn be we were carrying them.

Tuesday Stob Mhic Mhartuin - Kinlochleven to Glencoe 25th March 2008 - OS Grid Reference: NN208576 - interesting day out and a jaunt up Stob Mhic Mhartuin which is the actual start of the famous Aonach Eagach - however , thats a trip I wont be doing unless forced! I dont have a head for the heights on that ridge walk. That said, next year I may take this route for a trip up Am Bodach without having to do the ridge. Today though I played around on here, then via the Devil's Staircase went for lunch at Kinlochleven. Only problem was there was no bus or lift back to Invercoe so I had a 2 hour hike back to the camp site. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=32165&l=e0d71&id=595303046

Saturday - Snow in the Glyders North Wales - What a fabulous days walking. When we arrived we found that all the tops were covered in Snow. Ascending from the Ogwen Valley up via Cwm Bochlwyd we crossed the stile at the wall between Bristly and Tryfan and then found we were faced with Snow and Ice. As I didnt have a Winter Scouts Authorisation I was now faced with turning back, or ascending the plateau tryign to avoid all the winter elements. We proceeded to cross toward the Miners track that comes of the top of the Glyders avaoiding most snow and ice. At various points I dog led one of the scouts. We then scrambled up the rocks next to the Miners to gain the plateau. We walked part way up towards the summit of Glyder Fach but turned back before reaching the bolder field above Bristly as it was too dangerous to go beyond as the group were not equiped and several were nervous. We then had a really long trip almost as far as Capel to descend safely to the road. Couldnt drop of the sides as there was snow and ice and we had to get below that level first. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=34946&l=53ffe&id=595303046

Sunday - Glyders - Cantilever, Glyder Fach - what a completely different day to that day in April. We went all the way to the summit and also took customery pics on the Cantilever. We beat a hasty retreat from the summit of Glyder Fach due to an electrical storm and violant lightening. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=37436&l=786e1&id=595303046

Snowdon - via Watkin - poor weather - frightened adults. Took a party of church goers up the Watkin Path. The weather was getting worse as we ascended. As we reached the ridge between Snowdon and Y Lliwedd the weather was so bad we tried to ascend Y Lliwedd but turned back. One of the group was then so frightened it took until after 6pm to get her down to the road again. Very good group management experience.

Sun Snowdon Pyg Track - the fiesty group - these were the older Explorers with one young 13yr old scout to slow them down. 2:30mins to the summit and they could have gone faster but I slowed them down for safety. Bit of fun when we were on the top. We had a radio and radio'd our other wto groups who were coming up the Watkin, both were shocked that we were on the top at that time. They were still half way up the watkin. This was why the rest of the week, all groups went up the Pyg. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=54682&l=c1350&id=595303046

Mon Snowdon Pyg Track - A fine 2:45 min trip to the top of Wales. Just a shame it was windy and off and on rain. Everyone had a fabulous day though and we met one of our other groups coming up as we went down. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=63721&l=023cf&id=595303046

Thurs Snowdon Pyg Track - rain, rain and more rain - worst day of the week for hill walking. It rained from the car park to the summit and then down the miners back to the car park. We changed in the bus shelter whilst we waited for the Scout mini bus to pick us up. The cafe was a rip off - £1 for a can of pop. No wonder people dont want to spend money here. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=63722&l=059c7&id=595303046

Considering the ages of the children in the group the time taken was superb. Returned via the Miners so they could play in the lake. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=63725&l=55b7f&id=595303046

Saturday - Cornel in 70 mph winds - chose one of the worst weekends in the year to spend a day out on the hills in North Wales. Had been invited to the 10 year anniversary of the opening of the annex at Cornel Scout Centre on the Sunday so decided to go over on the saturday and stay over having a days walking. Knew things were going to be bad when the Trefriew road was closed after I got through due to flooding. This was the weekend of the abandoned Lake District marathon. Capel was recording winds of up to 70 mph. I decided to go up onto Craig Wen and potter around the Carned. I fought my way onto Crimpiau and was blown off the summit. Crawled back up for a photo lying on the ground. The struggled to Capel Curig before deciding to head back to Cornel via a lower path, driving wind and rain. Was I glad of a cuppa when I got back. Went to the pub in Trefriew for Steak and Chips and to warm up. - Hadnt realized that Crimpiau is classified as a 'Bridget'. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=65602&l=1eee9&id=595303046

Pen yr Helgi Du - lies on the south-eastern flanks of Carnedd Llewelyn, and is linked to Carnedd Llewelyn over the col of Bwlch Eryl Farchog, a knife-edge ridge over the cliffs of Craig Yr Ysfa. Walked up from the main A5, the ground was iced up. After reaching the summit we couldn’t go over to Carnedd Llewelyn as the scramble down was all iced up and too dangerous.

Ogwen Valley, to Cwm Bochlywd, up the miners track on snow and ice , onto the Glyder Ridge and up to the Cantilever Stone on Glyder Fach. Had to back off towards Capel Curig as I had scouts with me and had to find a safer descent route to the road.

The one day Lötschenpass hike started in the morning by taking a bus to Gasterntal valley, the village of Selden. From Selden, we started to hike up towards Lötschenglacier. At first, the path was mostly quite easy, but after a while it started getting steeper and doing more 'zic-zac'. Finally, we reached the beginning of the glacier, which is by the way called 'the world's safest glacier'. Mainly, because it doesn't move so much, so there are no unexpected crags under the surface snow. Then we hiked up the glacier to the Lötschenpass hut, 2690m. On the way up to the hut the Explorers decided to drop a ruck sack which near;ly knocked me from a ledge high above the glacier. From the hut, we hiked down to Lötschental valley and to the village of Ferden. We took a bus from Ferden to Goppenstein, where we jumped off and took a train to Kandersteg, through the Lötschbergtunnel. We met a guide when we were on the glacier who actually told us that most people do what we were doing over two days, not the 1 day that we were doing.

Three Valley Hike - This hike we visited three different valleys on the same trip. Starting at 14.00 on the first day with a 3 hour walk into the Ueschinen Valley, it threw it down with hailstones the size of golf balls, we then spent the night in the Ueschinen Hut, an alpine hut at 1890m. The toilet facilities were gross! The next morning was the highlight of the whole week when we climbed to an elevation of 2735m, providing some spectacular views of the Alps and Adelboden. After crossing the Engstligengrat we descended over Schwarzgratli, past the Schwarenbach Hotel and arrived at the Sunnuel cable car which took us back to Kandersteg. Over two days we gained 1500m and over 16km.

Stob Coire Nan Lochan – normal route up this mountain, however this year I turned back at a rock step next to an iced waterfall - don’t know why, but the feeling I had just wasn’t right to make the step and I couldn’t protect the step with a rope – thought best was to turn back.

Helmeth Hill and Caer Caradoc near Church Stretton in Shropshire. First time walking here and went on my own to explore the two hills. Car parking is limited at the start of this route that takes in Helmeth, might well be better to start the walk at another venue and include the two on a longer circular walk. Helmeth is a lovely wooded hill in stark contrast to Caradoc that is bare of any tree apart from a few Rowan. Caradoc though is fascinating as it was an ancient hill fort and you can still make out the ramparts on the summit.

Devils Kitchen \ Yr Garn, as part of a safety party assisting a group of charity walkers, myself and Simon Heys were the checkpoint just below Yr Garn and above the Devils Kitchen in the Glyders/Ogwen Valley. Notable aspect of this walk was that when the last group left Nant Peris to climb the Glyders, we had to quickly drive around to Ogwen Cottage and climb up to our checkpoint. We ended up sat up there in cold and rain in an emergency shelter waiting for groups to come through.

A walk with Amanda from the back of Joe Browns at Capel Curig up onto the Glyders to Yr Foel Goch . It was a fitness walk and testing navigation. Walked for three hours from 12:20 to 15:20 then turned around. It then got dark and was raining and foggy so it tested navigational expertise in getting down safely , negotiating the crags toward Capel. Got down into the car park by 6pm. Fun day out. |
